Poem : A Field of Stubble, lying sere by Emily Dickinson

A Field of Stubble, lying sere
Beneath the second Sun --
Its Toils to Brindled People thrust --
Its Triumphs -- to the Bin --
Accosted by a timid Bird
Irresolute of Alms --
Is often seen -- but seldom felt,
On our New England Farms --

Poem : The Unicorn by Rainer Maria Rilke

The saintly hermit, midway through his prayers
stopped suddenly, and raised his eyes to witness
the unbelievable: for there before him stood
the legendary creature, startling white, that
had approached, soundlessly, pleading with his eyes.

The legs, so delicately shaped, balanced a
body wrought of finest ivory. And as
he moved, his coat shone like reflected moonlight.
High on his forehead rose the magic horn, the sign
of his uniqueness: a tower held upright
by his alert, yet gentle, timid gait.

The mouth of softest tints of rose and grey, when
opened slightly, revealed his gleaming teeth,
whiter than snow. The nostrils quivered faintly:
he sought to quench his thirst, to rest and find repose.
His eyes looked far beyond the saint's enclosure,
reflecting vistas and events long vanished,
and closed the circle of this ancient mystic legend.

Religious Poems : God the Actor by Raymond A. Foss

At the beginning,
before the beginning of time
before the beginning
God alive, God eternal

God the actor, bringing forth
creator, imagination seeing
all that is to be, all that was
by his hands brought into being

Loving us, caring for us
bringing us back to him when we stray
the wonder of creation
a window on the creator
God the actor in his world

Poem : Deluded swain, the pleasure by Robert Burns

DELUDED swain, the pleasure
The fickle Fair can give thee,
Is but a fairy treasure,
Thy hopes will soon deceive thee:
The billows on the ocean,
The breezes idly roaming,
The cloud’s uncertain motion,
They are but types of Woman.

O art thou not asham’d
To doat upon a feature?
If Man thou wouldst be nam’d,
Despise the silly creature.
Go, find an honest fellow,
Good claret set before thee,
Hold on till thou art mellow,
And then to bed in glory!
